With exhuberant vocal lines changing between homophony and simple polyphony, this piece has the feel of a madrigal. A contrapuntal fabric is shared between two voices while the other pair provides a recurring ostinato. Free improvisation is encouraged (but not required), allowing additonal players to participate with handbells, glockenspiel, chimes, or vibraphone using only the "black" notes of the scale. This easily allows children to participate. The effect is enhanced when the congregation is encircled by the optional percussion players. |
